Babydolls
The babydoll has historically been synonymous with female liberation, from nightwear and lingerie to punk performance and couture. They signified the emancipation from corsetry and strictures of hemline etiquette. Its appearance at the turn of the 20th century was in stark contrast to the idealised body standards of the time. The popularity of the style gained traction with the 1956 cinematic release of Babydoll starring Tennessee Williams' where the Babydoll officially became widely associated with a political and sexual freedom, as well as a physical one.
"I've dreamt of a liberated woman who will no longer be swathed in fabric, armour-plated. All my lines are styles for quick and fluid movement. My dresses are real dresses, ultra-light, free of padding and corseting, garments that will float on a body delivered from bondage." - Hubert de Givenchy
